Broken
September 2012
A co-presentation with Nakai Theatre at the Yukon Arts Centre
Directed by Maiko Bae Yamamoto
Written and Performed by Brian Fidler
William has a cardboard box of his late Grandfather’s things: an old hat, a carousel of ancient slides and a broken camera: junk to anyone else but him. To William the box is a porthole into the turbulent year that wrenched his life apart. It’s time to open the box.
Through physical theatre, found object puppetry and straight up storytelling this one-man play about memory, aging and the bond between a Grandfather and Grandson, conveys a universal experience through a very personal story.
About the development of Broken
The idea was to create a show about Alzheimer’s disease through the animation of broken objects. We wanted to tell the story of a grandfather and a grandson and the effect of Alzheimer’s on their relationship.
We began developing Broken in 2009 with the assistance of Nakai Theatre. We have performed a workshop presentation at Nakai Theatre’s Pivot Festival and workshopped the story at Playwright’s Theatre Centre’s The Colony.
Broken will be presented in the fall of 2012 as a co-presentation with Nakai Theatre.
